There is plenty to choose from if you desire a four-seat Mercedes convertible car. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet is the middle child in the range. The styling mirrors the C and S-Class and it must be said that it is a somewhere-in-between car. Bigger and more luxurious than the C-Class but less expensive and more compact than the S-Class. While it might seem like they have too many similar cars, they virtually have the marketplace to themselves for large premium quality convertibles.

While the previous generation E-Class Cabriolet was based on the C-Class platform, this one is the genuine article, sharing platform, engines and equipment with the E-Class Saloon/Sedan and Estate/Wagon. That is good news as the latest E-Class is deeply impressive. It is also larger than the older car, with much more interior and luggage space. The roof is made from well-insulated fabric making better use of the luggage space than a folding hardtop. It takes 20 seconds to fold and can be lowered or raised at speeds of up to 30mph.

The range of engines will suit most drivers but the emphasis is on smooth and refined rather than fast and furious. That all specifications and in particular the twin-turbo V6 E400 4MATIC, are very capable cars. Air Body Control air suspension is an expensive optional extra but it gives excellent ride quality.

Inside there is room for 4 adults and the design and finish has a very premium feel. Driving is refined with the roof down thanks to a pair of wind diffusers. The front AIRCAP mesh rising up above the windscreen looks a little strange but is very effective.
