Mazda MX5 Black Limited Edition

Mazda MX5 Black Edition

Sounds like a dream come true doesn’t it? The MX5 Miata is everyone’s favourite roadster; charming, affordable and a hoot to drive. It’s always been a car focussed on handling rather than power, but who hasn’t wondered what it would be like as a hardcore sports model? If Black Editions from other brands are anything to go by it should be exactly this but sadly this Mazda special edition will disappoint us once again.

It looks the part with its Mazda MX-5 GT racing car inspired colour scheme but underneath it is the same old Miata. The ‘Black’ bit refers to the blacked out trim of the car – mirrors, wheels and retractable hardtop along with much of the interior trim. It comes in a choice of paint shades – Spirited Green metallic, Crystal White Pearlescent or Velocity Red mica. Other than this it is much the same as the 160ps, 2.0-litre Mazda MX-5 Sport Tech on which it’s based.

A pity really, particularly when you see how well the Mazda MX-5 GT performs on the track. The race car somas with 275hp engine of course, mounted in a stripped down 850 kg chassis. Something we’ll just have to keep dreaming about. The future may well bring a car along these lines – rumours suggest that the next generation Miata will be considerably lighter. For now the Mazda MX-5 Sport Black will have to be enough and the standard car’s nimble handling will continue to win driver’s praise.

500 examples of the Mazda MX-5 Sport Black will be produced for UK customers only, each costing GBP £22,995 (on the road).

Maserati GranCabrio Sport

Maserati GranCabrio Sport

The Quattroporte based Maserati GranCabrio is a stunning car but as you would expect from a convertible sports car based on a large saloon it doesn’t have the sharpest driving dynamics. It made up for this in being a charismatic cruiser with stunning looks and an engine note to die for.

Maserati aim to change our perceptions of this car with a new Sport model to be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show later this year. The Maserati GranCabrio Sport has subtle visual differences to the standard car. The headlamps and grill are darker and there are some new dark painted 20” alloy wheels and at the back are black exhaust pipes. Seeing the pattern there? Maserati are going for a subtle approach with this car. Unlike the latest sports Jaguars Porsches and Bentleys this car is a whole lot more sophisticated.

Power comes from a tuned version of the standard Ferrari based V8 engine with an extra 10 horsepower squeezed out. That doesn’t sound like much but power was never the cars shortfall. Use of that power is what Maserati has been focusing on. The Maserati Grantourismo MC Stradale showed us what could be done with this platform and the changes to produce the GranCabrio Sport are equally as miraculous. The suspension is stiffened and although this should mean a harder ride the boffins at Maserati have managed to keep it surprisingly comfortable. The handling is transformed; feeling agile and responsive without being harsh. Cornering is crisp and precise with a nice weighty feel to the steering. The Sport feels much faster than the standard car even if on paper there isn’t much difference. Body control is better and it gives more confidence when cornering. The engine still sounds great – one of the best sounds of any car and the hi revving power band feels better suited to a more sporting car.

Of course many drivers will happily trade the involving drive for comfort and for those the standard Maserati GranCabrio will remain available.

Spada Codatronca Monza

Spada Codatronca Monza

Italian exotic car builder Spada have released full details of their Codatronca Monza convertible supercar. The Monza was first revealed at the exclusive Monaco Top Marques show earlier in the year however we weren’t told what it might be capable of.

The Spada Codatronca Monza is in fact powered by a 7 litre Chevrolet V8 with twin superchargers tuned to produce an impressive 710 bhp. This is enough to take the roadster form standing to 62 mph in less than 3 seconds and then on to a top speed of 208 mph. The open top Spada comes with a goo old fashioned six-speed manual gearbox and a stripped down cockpit worthy of its FIA GT3 spec breaking system.

The lightweight car was built by Spadavetturesport at the request of Aznom, a well known Monza company specialising in the world of luxury. The interior of the car was designed by Aznom themselves reflecting the spiders of the 1960s.

Spada shot to fame a few years back when the father and son team of Ercole and Paolo Spada released the Codatronca coupé. The two designers could be described as motoring royalty with the string of cars that can be attributed to them. Ercole Spada for example penned the legendary Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato.

The price is yet to come but if you need to know then you probably can’t afford it.

Brabus 800 E V12 Cabriolet

Brabus 800 E Cabriolet

Brabus are renowned for their muscled up versions of Mercedes car but they have surpassed themselves with the latest E-Class Convertible. By shoe-horning in a 6.3-litre Biturbo Mercedes V12 engine they have produced the world’s most powerful and fastest four-seat convertible.

The Brabus 800 E V12 Cabriolet has a massive 788 bhp putting it well behind the previous record holder – the 621 bhp Bentley Supersports Convertible. Even more amazing is the torque figure which at 1,047lb.ft at 5,500rpm had to be electronically limited to a still mighty 811 lb.ft to stop it tearing this convertible apart. The top speed? A hefty 231 mph while 62 mph (100 kph) is reached in just 3.7 seconds.

Of course it is not just the engine that makes a car. There is also a limited slip differential to keep the wheels under control and a unique bonnet and bumper with enlarged grills to feed more cool air into the engine. There’s also side ducts to let the hot air out again from the engine and huge steal brake discs. The custom designed suspension has a wider the track to help stability.

Inside there is a bespoke leather and carbon fibre interior with a 250 mph speedometer.

The Brabus 800 E V12 Cabriolet is to be launched in Dubai and orders will be taken at a price of €478,000 (GBP £423,000).

US to get first Diesel Convertibles

Diesel convertibles have been around in Europe for quite a while but across the pond in the US they are still unheard of. The reason is all to do with fuel prices. Fuel tax is far higher across Europe and every MPG can make a sizeable difference. Cost savings don’t have to mean an end to fun however and with modern diesel engines getting cleaner and quieter they are becoming more attractive to convertible drivers.

With fuel prices ever on the increase Volkswagen have decided that it might be time to introduce the diesel convertible to American drivers. The new Beetle Cabriolet will come with the option of a 2 litre turbo diesel powerplant.

In Europe the diesel convertible is particularly popular with company car drivers who need to balance high mileage practicalities with driver enjoyment. Whether American drivers are willing to sacrifice engine note for fuel economy in their convertibles however, is yet to be seen.

Abarth 500C gets manual option

Abarth 500C

The Abarth version of Fiat’s 500C has always been a blast to drive but purists missed out as the only gearbox option was the paddle-shift automatic. Until now that is. The five speed manual version has everything that made the Fiat 500C Abarth great but with a good old fashioned stick-shift.

At £16,856 (GBP) on the road the ‘Competizione’ box equipped convertible comes in a full £1000 less than the auto and boasts slightly better performance figures. the 0-62 mph time dips under 8 seconds at 7.9 while the little convertible tops out at the same 128 mph. Fuel economy seems unaffected.

As with the paddle-shift Abarth the new car has a 135bhp 1.4 16v Turbo T-Jet engine and Dualdrive electrically assisted power steering with ‘Sport Mode’ while stopping is courtesy of front (ventilated) and rear disc brakes.
