VW Golf GTi Cabriolet to make Geneva debut

VW Golf GTI Cabriolet

Since the new Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet was first announced fans have been eagerly awaiting a GTi version of the droptop. The renderings so far released give us a taste of what the new GTi Cabrio will look like when it is launched at the Geneva Motor Show. The sporty badge should help to differentiate the Golf Cabrio from the hardtop VW Eos.

Under the bonnet is the same 2.0 litre turbo four cylinder engine used for the hatchback GTi linked to a 6 speed gearbox and limited-slip differential. 17 inch alloy wheels fill the arches at each corner along with the usual discrete visual cues that set the GTI apart from lesser Golfs. The benchmark 0 to 62 mph sprint is covered in 7.3 seconds with either the manual transmission or optional DSG sequential system, while top speed is 147 mph (146 mph for the DSG).

The insulated, fully automatic fabric roof drops down in just 9.5 seconds even at speeds up to 18 mph to reveal classic tartan cloth upholstery. We love it – the first time a VW interior has made us feel a little giddy in a long time, but if that’s not your cup of tea leather (we assume not plaid) is still to be an option.

A brace of airbags and an automatic roll-over protection system tick the safety box with a five star Euro NCAP certificate to prove it.

Prices and full specs are yet to be announced but expect to see the VW Golf GTi Cabriolet arriving in dealers’ showrooms by mid summer.

Remixed Maybach by Jay Z and Kanye West goes to auction

Otis Maybach by Jay Z and Kanye West

If you’re a fan of hip-hop you’ll remember a Maybach 57 getting a Mad Max-style makeover in last year’s video of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s track ‘Otis’. The luxury car is seen to be cut up with power saws and welding torches to create an open-top machine with swapped around body panels and fire pouring from the tail pipes. The final scene of the music video promises that the car will be auctioned off for charity and that is just what is happening.

As lot 1 in Phillips de Pury’s Contemporary Art Sale to be held in New York on 8th March 2012, the 2004 Maybach 57 is estimated to fetch $100,000-150,000 for the benefit of the Save the Children Fund. This apparent value is close to that of the car before its radical customisation although its new value was closer to $300,000 USD.

Star of a video which has been viewed worldwide and with over 37 million YouTube hits the limo customisation may not have been as costly as it first seems. The ‘thundersome cruiser’ thought to have been formerly owned by one of the rappers has all four doors and roof panels removed exposing the raw frame. A crude sheet-metal body kit widens the wheel arches to allow for larger wheels while an over-sized fire-spitting exhaust pipe extends form the rear. The new owner will not be able to drive the Maybach in public as it is no longer road-legal.

The proceeds of the sale are being specified for the Save the Children East Africa appeal to aid 12 million people who face severe food shortages.

Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept

Range Rover Evoque Convertible

When we heard the rumours of an Range Rover Evoque Convertible a few months back we didn’t take them with much seriousness. A drop-top Rangie seemed a niche too far but the rumours were true and a completed concept car will be on show in Geneva in March.

The Range Rover Evoque Convertible concept has been launched to test the water and find out if there is a market for such a car. Range Rover call it the world’s first premium convertible SUV and the design is everything you would expect. It’s a full convertible with a Roll Over Protection System instead of fixed roll-bars. The top is a ‘fully retractable premium roof system’ which we assume means fabric with a glass rear window. No images of the car with the roof up have yet been released. Below the roof things are much the same as the standard 3-door Evoque. There are four seats inside so those wishing for a new five seat convertible will have to keep on waiting.

Range Rover Evoque Convertible

Overall, like the Nissan Munaro CrossCabriolet the Evoque looks better than you might expect and we can see it selling well in the premium sector. There are plenty of people wanting a car that is both practical and fun with the Evoque Convertible potentially ticking both boxes.

Although this is a concept vehicle at this stage the level of attention to detail tells us that if it is well received then production could be months away rather than years. More details will be released when the Convertible Range Rover goes on show in Geneva.

Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse – the most powerful roadster in the world

Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse

The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport has been the undisputed king of the convertible supercars for some time now and although the company has produced a long line of special editions we had assumed that the performance figures and number of well healed customers had peaked. Proving us quite wrong is the latest and greatest Veyron – the Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse.

The Vitesse benefits from the 1,200 horsepower powerplant from the record breaking Bugatti Super Sport Coupe. Although it’s essentially the same eight litre, quad turbo W16 engine from the ‘standard’ thousand horsepower version; internal resistance has been reduced while bigger turbo chargers and intercoolers have been fitted. Bugatti claim to have managed to build the most powerful roadster in the world without loosing the usability the Veyron is famed for.

The launch will be at the Geneva Motor Show and while full details have yet to be released but we’d bet that the top speed is close to the Super Sport’s 267 mph although this may be limited while the roof is down. Keeping things under control are various chassis enhancements and bigger brakes.

Bugatti haven’t disclosed the asking price for their new convertible car but you shouldn’t expect much change from $3 million (USD).

2012 looks to be a particularly good year with a number of convertible cars being officially unveiled at the Swiss show. There is the latest Audi TT RS plus Roadster and the new BMW M6 Convertible that we have already featured. There have also been teasers sent out about a new Lotus Convertible – perhaps an Evora Roadster, we’ll have to wait and see.

SsangYong have surprised us with their XIV-2 Convertible concept which will be unveiled at the Geneva show. A new direction for the company but from the preview pictures it looks good.

Ferrari have also finally admitted the much rumoured update to the California Convertible. The refresh will include a horsepower boost as well as small visual tweaks.

At more realistic prices VW will unveil the new Golf GTI Convertible – a name which has been sadly missing from the car industry for a number of years now.

There may well be more update from Geneva over the next couple of weeks so check back here for the latest convertible news.

SsangYong XIV-2 Convertible Concept Car

SsangYong XIV-2 Convertible

SsangYong are considering whether to follow Nissan and explore the market for a Convertible Crossover. The Crossover market is big business at the moment with family buyers looking for a combination of space, practicality and good looks. Meanwhile South Korean car builder SsangYong who have long been a builder of tough off-road vehicles have learn’t much from a long term partnership with Mercedes-Benz and are steadily breaking into the Crossover market.

The latest SsangYong XIV-2 Convertible concept will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March as a successor to the hard-top XIV concept shown just last year. The new car has a sliding roof similar to that seen on the Fiat 500 Convertible which leaves the window frames in place to add rigidity to the chassis.

SsangYong XIV-2 Convertible

The idea of a convertible crossover may at first seem a strange one but Nissan as proved that there is one with their Murano Convertible which has an enthusiastic following despite its critics. The XIV-2 is a handsome looking car and could prove popular with families looking for to enjoy top-down fun without making practical compromises.

The SsangYong XIV-2 Convertible concept is equipped with ‘eco-friendly’ 1.6 litre diesel and petrol engines meeting Euro VI emission regulations however there are no indications yet if this car will make production.
