The Camaro Convertible is the muscle car reborn. It is clearly desirable and will put a smile on the face of many drivers for a very reasonable price. On the other hand, this retro gas guzzler seems rather out of touch with the 21st century. Either way Chevy seem to have a winner on their hands for now as it steals sales from the older but perhaps more capable Ford Mustang.
Power comes from either an already potent V6 in this standard model as opposed to the muscular V8 in the SS.
Awesome car and it has a v6 engine.
I rented a 2014 Camaro convertible with the V6 engine in Palm Springs California. The in car ‘entertainment’ touch controls are a little painful to use when driving as the lack of tactile feedback means you need to look at the display rather than the road. The rear camera took me a little time to get used to too. The satellite navigation input was a little difficult for me also, as I am used to a QWERTY style input, not ABCDE. I didn’t look to see if it could be changed.
The heads up display is excellent, not only showing speed and revs but also music track details and satellite navigation instructions.
The convertible top has one central locking latch. The top, when down, takes up some of the already small trunk/boot space. It seems only the Germans make convertibles that hide the top with elegance, but with the top down and the top cover in place this looks very good indeed. There is limited room for rear passengers.
The handling, ride and general driving experience was much better than I expected for an American ‘muscle’ car. The engine has a great sound. I was stopped by the police; he asked ‘do you know why I stopped you?’. Driving too fast I replied. He said, I didn’t see you, but I heard you. That made me smile. If you can resist the compulsion to really drive this car and so keep your licence, and can live with the limitations, this car may be the perfect antidote to a mid life crisis. It’s exhilarating.
