The Daihatsu Copen is the kind of cute little car that could only come from Japan. It was one of the first small convertibles to offer a folding hardtop and has an excellent level of standard equipment inside its compact cabin. The tiny turbocharged engine has been replaced by a larger unit which gives better economy and a good turn of speed which is magnified by the go-cart like chassis. Unfortunately, luggage space is of a minimum in the Copen particularly when the roof is down. It has been around for quite a while now but still stands as the most smiles for your money of any convertible car.
In 2011, Daihatsu ceased exports to Europe due to the unfavourable exchange rates.
Super, SUPER CUTE – if it wasn’t a car you’d pick it up and cuddle it!! Owned a Smart Roadster Coupe before this so am used to the small turbo engine and lack of luggage space, but absolutely no problems or complaints. A fantastic looking and nippy little car, solidly build, great fuel economy, admiring glances virtually everywhere you go – but above all it MAKES YOU SMILE – what more could you ask, driving never needs to be boring again!
Have just bought my second Copen to use as a weekend car. Used to own the 660cc version a few years ago and loved it, now own a 1.3 version and love it even more! It’s fun to drive and is great as a cheap convertible to ‘bomb’ around the country roads with the roof down. It has fast become a member of the family and hope to keep it for many years to come.
