The 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is off to a grand start with the launch of the BMW Zagato Roadster concept. Based on the BMW Zagato Coupe shown at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este just 6 weeks ago, this roadster shows a development of the design.

This week’s Beijing auto show has brought out a few surprises with manufacturers saving some of their more unusual concepts for the open-minded Asian market. The VW E-Bubster is one such concept that we are particularly fond of. This electric convertible takes the cute VW Beetle and turns it into a cut-down sports car.

BMW have chosen the fast moving Chinese market as the first to see their BMW i8 Spyder concept in the flesh. The all-electric sports car promises high performance combined with economy and low emissions. Though a concept car it paves the way for future BMW convertibles.

When we heard the rumours of an Range Rover Evoque Convertible a few months back we didn’t take them with much seriousness. A drop-top Rangie seemed a niche too far but the rumours were true and a completed concept car will be on show in Geneva in March.

SsangYong are considering whether to follow Nissan and explore the market for a Convertible Crossover. Their SsangYong XIV-2 Convertible concept will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March as a successor to the hard-top XIV concept shown just last year.

The latest concept from Smart is a funky little utility vehicle. Designed to combine active lifestyle practicality with urban practicality the Smart For-Us is a fascinating idea. Unlike your average American pick-up there isn’t room for a jet-ski or a quad-bike but there is plenty of space for a couple of electric bikes.

The Daihatsu Copen has always been at the top of our list for value and fun but it has been around for a decade now so we have been keen to know what they will come up with next. The concept released at the Tokyo Motor Show can at least give us some ideas. Named the Daihatsu D-X (pronounced Dee Cross) it is a kind of tiny SUV/Roadster crossover.
